Old Man's Wake
There are a few folks in my family tree
Sometimes I wish weren’t a part of me
It’s all well and fine just some cheap DNA
Where the leaves fall the wind dictates
I watched a fire dance through the hills
I thought I’d take a chance on cheap thrills
I drank so much I could hardly stand
Now I spend my time in search of dry land
Even when I thought there was nothing more to say
Words were flying out my mouth in every single way
It was the icing on the cake
The old man’s wake
A funeral for a better day
My dreams last night were filled with snakes
Everywhere I went they followed me
I gave a mouse a sword said, “do your best”
He said I’ll kill but you must lead me to their nest.
What do you suppose that means
Perhaps darkness inside of me
I’m just trying to get rid
Maybe it’s nothing
Even when I thought there was nothing more to say
Words were flying out my mouth in every single way
It was the icing on the cake
The old man’s wake
A funeral for a better day
Just when I thought my words would finally stop
Some more flew out in a hiccup or a cough
It was all that I thought
I watched the old man rot
We put a prayer into God
Even when the world it’s turning cold
And the blood that pumps has all but froze
Take an icicle inside to thaw
In awe you stand with numb hands
Oh how I prayed for you
